5 take-home tips shared at the conference to help manage Gen-Y:

  1. Gen-Y is an ‘attitude’ not an ‘age bracket’
  2. HR must be willing to change the thinking of the company to keep it up-to-date and thereby not only better suit the newer generations entering the workforce, but also better serve those same generations in their own client bases. This will help drive the bottom line.
  3. There needs to be give and take on both sides: HR does need to appreciate the different working ethos of younger generations—and trust and empower them to accomplish tasks on their own. However, Gen-Y also needs to take into account the inherent inertia that exists in most companies because of years of doing things the same way.
  4. Working in the modern office doesn’t necessarily mean physically being there
  5. Collaborative working is the way forward—among all generations in the workforce.

Paul Arkwright, Publisher and Editor-in-Chief of HR Magazine concluded, “We hear so much from older generations talking about what they think Gen-Y wants. HR Magazine ensured that we had a number of Gen-Y present at the Conference to present their side of the story too. It was a great opportunity to hear things from both sides of the fence.”

Som arbejdsplads bør man nok tænke over flg:

The desire of younger employees to use social media, mobile devices, and the Internet more freely in the workplace is strong enough to influence their future job choice more than salary, according to an international study published by Cisco.

The second annual Cisco Connected World Technology Report, which surveyed more than 2,800 college students and young professionals in 14 countries, was commissioned to assess the challenges that companies face as they strive to balance employee and business needs amid increasing network demands, mobility capabilities and security risks.

The study revealed that one in three college students and young employees under the age of 30 (33%) said that they would prioritise social media freedom, device flexibility, and work mobility over salary in accepting a job offer, indicating that the expectations and priorities of the next generation of the world’s workforce is not solely tied to money.

Almost a third of the employees globally (31%) believe their comfort level with social media and devices was a factor in their hiring – an indication that companies acknowledge the value millennials provide in utilising technology to help companies’ efficiency and competitive advantage.

The importance of devices and the information they carry rivals the importance of money. Half of college students and young employees (49%) said they would rather lose their wallet or purse than their smartphone or mobile device.

Here are some of the more surprising highlights from the survey, by the numbers:

  • 40 percent of college students and 45 percent of young employees would accept a lower-paying job if it had more flexibility on device choice, social media access, and mobility than a higher-paying job with less flexibility.
  • 64 percent of college students would ask about social media usage policies during job interviews, and one in four overall (24 percent) said it will be a key factor in determining whether or not to accept an offer.
  • 41 percent of young professionals said their companies marketed a flexible device and social media policy to recruit and attract them.
  • More than half of college students globally (56 percent) replied that if they encountered a company that banned access to social media, they would either not accept the job offer or would join and find a way to get around it anyway.
  • 29 percent of college students believe that once they begin working, it will be their right –- not just a privilege –- to be able to work remotely with a flexible schedule.
